Floral Portrait Photo Session | Autumn in Paris

When it comes to photography, the most important thing to remember is the uniqueness of each person one has the pleasure of working with. Each one of us has distinctive personalities, dreams, goals, and ideas of what we wish photographs of ourselves to portray. When I work with clients my initial approach is to learn a little bit about who they are and what matters most to them. This has always not only made the photoshoot go smoothly, but also ensure that my clients are happy with their pictures. The best quality a photographer can have is understanding their clients and being able to bring their vision to life.

When working on one of my “Botanical Beauties” projects for my client Tatiana, the idea was to bring out her personality and sophisticated taste. When I met with her, we discussed how her goal was to look elegant yet powerful. She wanted something unique for her bedroom wall that was unlike standard portrait photos that she was seeing around. We discussed floral portraits and the color palette she was most interested in. While my client liked the color orange, she didn’t want the photos to have a seasonal theme look to them. She also mentioned her love for white, but as the color is associated with bridal shoots we discussed how to best incorporate it into the photographs without it being the center color. After multiple in person consultations, we decided to incorporate orange tones while being careful to keep the design simple and soft to compliment her yet keeping the focus on her and her personality. This can be achieved by posing your clients and coaching their expressions to capture the look you know they’re looking for.

I worked with a floral designer, Iryna Schulzhenko, who created a gorgeous wearable floral arrangement with the color palette Tatiana had chosen. The day of the photoshoot we got to fully focus on the photo session as everything had been decided and planned beforehand. This allowed for the session to be fun and easy going as we all had a great time capturing this concept. We worked with a grey background to contrast the white tones and add cooler tones behind the warm orange of the flowers. The orange floral ended up bringing out Tatiana’s freckles and complimenting her complexion. These are the small details that can really add to the story and theme behind each image. We ended up naming the project “Autumn in Paris” to represent the sophisticated aesthetic the client wanted. When I spoke to Tatiana after the photos were ready and printed for her to add to her bedroom wall, she expressed how happy she was with them and the overall process. It’s results like these that make me happy to do what I do and makes the extra time spent getting to know each client so worth it. Photography is so much more than capturing images, it’s capturing a story, personality, and feeling that makes it a work of art.
