Floral Portrait Photo Shoot | Spring Awakening Project

Floral Portraits Master Course

Floral Portraits

by Yuliya Panchenko

Seasons come and go in every aspect of our lives, whether it’s a feeling, the focus of our work, our routine, or even our mindsets. This past spring I worked with Iryna Shulzhenko to capture the beauty of flowers blooming after the cool winter. The idea was to show the colorful transition from winter to spring. From the very beginning we discussed picking two colors, grey and yellow. The grey to represent the foggy winter mornings, the yellow to represent warm sunny days. The combination coming together to capture the feeling of serenity that comes when nature all around us becomes colorful once again.

The project was filmed as part of our Floral Portrait Master Course to demonstrate every detail that goes into making these gorgeous botanical beauty headshots as well as creating and executing floral wearable designs.  The work that we do takes multiple hours at the studio, plus days spent beforehand planning for it. The models come for hair and makeup and each design is styled to fit them perfectly. Often times the designs are added piece by piece, pedal by pedal, depending on what they are. For this project, the headpiece was crafted during the shoot. The elegant design helps symbolize flowers opening and expanding as they welcome the spring sun. Having the wearable design ready to go left more of the time open to focus on posing and lighting. As this shoot was themed based on the seasons, lighting was very important. The model needed to be in full focus with little to no shadows. The only shadows were used to accentuate bone structure and highlight the right areas, such as the eyes. These are just a few of the many lessons we teach in depth in our online courses.

Photography is a bit like painting, where one has to use color to best suit each concept. Since for this shoot the colors represent the seasons, having the grey background is a symbolism of leaving winter behind as spring steps forward. Framing your shot correctly is also essential in capturing just the right angle and closeness to your subject. Our courses go through step-by-step processes for photography tips and techniques.; including but not limited to our Floral Portraits. They’re a unique way of learning master techniques from the comfort of your home, even if you leave thousands of miles away. Seasons come and go, so make sure this next season brings you one step closer to conquering your dreams.
